Regina C. Lapate et al. study the role of lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) in metacognitive awareness in humans. They use transcranial magnetic stimulation, emotional face stimuli and model-based analyses to demonstrate that LPFC function promotes metacognitive awareness of the orientation, but not the emotional expression, of human faces.
