Infant-phase reddening by surface Fe-peak elements in a normal type Ia supernova

Very early observations of a type Ia supernova—from within one hour of explosion—show a red colour that develops and rapidly disappears. These data provide information on the initial explosion mechanism: surface nuclear burning on the white dwarf or extreme mixing of the nuclear burning process.

The delay of shock breakout due to circumstellar material evident in most type II supernovae

The shock breakout (SBO) is the first electromagnetic signature of a supernova (SN) explosion. Förster et al. find that in nearly all type II SNe they survey that the SBO occurs on a timescale of days, indicating that the progenitors were surrounded by thick circumstellar matter when they exploded.

Supernova SN 2015bs is a hydrogen-rich type II supernova that appears to have been generated by a high-mass (>18 M_⊙) and low-metallicity (<0.1 Z_⊙) red supergiant progenitor.

Diabetes recovery by age-dependent conversion of pancreatic δ-cells into insulin producers

An investigation of the influence of age on the generation of insulin-producing cells after β-cell loss in mice reveals that, whereas α-cells can reprogram to produce insulin from puberty to adulthood, efficient reconstitution in the very young is through δ-cell reprogramming, leading to complete diabetes recovery.

Epithelial septate junction assembly relies on melanotransferrin iron binding and endocytosis in Drosophila

The iron binding protein melanotransferrin (MTf) is found to localize to Drosophila septate junctions. During epithelial maturation, the assembly of septate junctions depends on endocytosis and recycling of iron-bound MTf.
