  • Organ regeneration by stem cells is required to compensate for tissue damage during aging, although how stem cells are maintained in adulthood is poorly understood. Here, the authors show in Drosophila that Shavenbaby interacts with Yorkie, a mediator of Hippo signalling, to ensure adult stem cell survival.

  • Payre and colleagues identify a gene, GstE14, needed for production of the insect steroid hormone ecdysone and find that this hormone acts through Pri peptides to control the timing of differentiation events.

  • Plant regeneration can occur via formation of a mass of pluripotent cells known as callus. Here, Ishihara et al. show that acquisition of regenerative capacity of callus-forming cells requires a lysine-specific demethylase that removes H3K4me2 to prime gene expression in response to regenerative cues.

  • PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a class of small RNAs that are known to associate with the PIWI proteins Argonaute 3, Aubergine and Piwi to silence retrotransposons in Drosophila germ lines. However, the primary processing pathway, one of two systems to produce piRNAs in Drosophila, remains incompletely characterized. Primary piRNA processing in a Drosophila ovarian somatic cell line is now analysed to reveal the large Maf gene traffic jam as a new piRNA cluster.
