Motor skill learning relies on the primary motor cortex (M1), but how dopaminergic inputs from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) affect M1 at the neuronal and network levels remains unclear. Here, the authors show that VTA dopaminergic signaling is essential for reorganization of M1 layer 2-3 neurons, transforming their activity and connectivity to an expert configuration.
