Amide-to-ester substitution as a stable alternative to N-methylation for increasing membrane permeability in cyclic peptides

Naturally occurring peptides with high membrane permeability often have backbone ester bonds. Here, the authors investigated the effect of an amide-to-ester substitution on membrane permeability of peptides and found the substitution is useful for improving membrane permeability of cyclic peptides.

Significant contribution of subseafloor microparticles to the global manganese budget

Ferromanganese minerals are abundant in marine environments but the extent of these minerals in subseafloor sediments remains unknown. Here the authors find abundant ferromanganese microparticles in oxic pelagic clays, accounting for 14–16% of the new estimate of the global manganese budget (9.2–47.4 Tt).

Yohey Suzuki, Seiya Yamashita et al. discover the presence of bacterial cells in the iron-rich smectite on aged subseafloor basaltic rock using nanoscale solid characterizations. Analysis of their lipid profiles and DNA sequences reveals the dominance of heterotrophic bacteria, suggesting the presence of organic matter resources in the subsea basalt.
