Understanding the structural dynamics and protein-substrate interactions for the bacterial cytochrome P450BM3, a haem-containing enzyme, is a prerequisite for its application as a biocatalyst. Here, the authors use X-ray free electron laser crystallography to determine the intermediate structures of engineered P450BM3 during styrene epoxidation, probing the dynamic control of styrene orientation for the enantioselectivity of the reaction.
