Large fault slip peaking at trench in the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake

The 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake slip occurred on the shallowest part of the megathrust, but the nature of the shallow slip has been poorly constrained. Here, the authors model bathymetry differences before and after the earthquake to determine that the slip exceeded 60 m increasing towards the trench.

Controlling factor of incoming plate hydration at the north-western Pacific margin

Bend faulting prior to subduction is considered to promote hydration, yet the relationship remains ambiguous. Coseismic fault rupture at the trench axis during the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake

Subduction zone models often assume that the shallowest part of the plate interface slips aseismically. Images of the subduction trench next to the Tohoku-oki epicentre, captured using seismic reflection data 11 days after the 2011 earthquake, reveal deformation structures in sediments next to the trench, indicating that fault slip did reach the sea floor.

Seismological evidence of mantle flow driving plate motions at a palaeo-spreading centre

At oceanic spreading centres, it is unclear whether plate motions drag the underlying mantle, or mantle flow pulls the overlying plates. Seismic imaging of a former speading centre in the Pacific Plate reveals strong seismic anisotropy that was generated by mantle flowing at speeds greater than plate motions, implying that mantle flow pulled this part of the plate.
