Involvement of a eukaryotic-like ubiquitin-related modifier in the proteasome pathway of the archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius

Small archaeal ubiquitin-like modifiers (SAMPs) have been hypothesized to be part of an ancestral version of the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Here, Anjum et al. identify a SAMP homologous to the eukaryotic ubiquitin-related modifier-1 and show that it is processed by the 20S core proteasome in S. acidocaldarius.

Structure of the hexameric HerA ATPase reveals a mechanism of translocation-coupled DNA-end processing in archaea

Thermophilic archaea have a minimal double-strand DNA break repair apparatus consisting of the HerA ATPase, NurA nuclease and Mre11–Rad50 complex. Here the authors solve the structure of a hexameric HerA ring from Sulfolobus solfataricus, and provide insight into a novel mechanism of DNA repair.

Parallel adaptation in autopolyploid Arabidopsis arenosa is dominated by repeated recruitment of shared alleles

Relative contributions of pre-existing versus de novo genomic variation to adaptation remain unclear. Here, the authors address this problem by examining the adaptation of autotetraploid Arabidopsis arenosa to serpentine soils and find that both types of variations contribute to rapid adaptation.
