Hydrogel-based platforms are promising candidates for sensing and therapeutic applications, but synthetic approaches to hydrogels that preserve the integrity and activity of the embedded sensing components are limited. Here, the authors report a method for the in situ strategy in which two non-assembling precursors are simply mixed under ambient aqueous conditions to form a coumarin-based supramolecular hydrogel, and demonstrate the application of the hydrogel material to paper strips for the detection of Fe(II) ions.
