Synthesis and characterization of crystalline polymeric carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) with sp³-hybridized carbon at elevated pressures

Crystal structure predictions have proposed the existence of polymeric H2CO3, but its high-pressure polymorphism has yet to be confirmed experimentally. Here, the authors synthesized single crystals of polymeric H₂CO₃ in a diamond anvil cell and demonstrated that its structure consists of polymerized \({[{{\rm{CO}}}_{4}]}^{4-}\) tetrahedra forming chains along the c-axis.

Link between plate fabric, hydration and subduction zone seismicity in Alaska

Subduction carries water into the Earth where it can influence seismicity. Analysis of the structure of the Alaskan subduction zone suggests fluid delivery is influenced by faults in the oceanic plate that formed at the mid-ocean ridge.

Tsunamigenic structures in a creeping section of the Alaska subduction zone

Creeping subduction zones are unlikely to generate tsunamigenic earthquakes. Analysis of a creeping part of the Alaskan subduction zone reveals fault structures similar to those in Tohoku, suggesting it may host large earthquakes and tsunamis.

Seismic evidence of effects of water on melt transport in the Lau back-arc mantle

Tomographically derived seismic velocities are used to infer the distribution of partial melt below the Lau Basin, revealing an unexpected relationship between the amount of in situ melt and the water content of the magma, indicating that subducted water enhances melt extraction.
