Direct growth of single-crystalline III–V semiconductors on amorphous substrates

Growth of high-quality III–V semiconductors for electronics and optoelectronics usually requires an atomic-lattice matched substrate. Here, the authors use templated liquid-phase crystal growth to create single-crystalline III–V material up to ten micrometres across on an amorphous substrate.

Visualizing nanoscale excitonic relaxation properties of disordered edges and grain boundaries in monolayer molybdenum disulfide

Strongly coupled magnon–phonon dynamics in a single nanomagnet

Exploring the magnon and phonon coupling may enable high efficiency magnonic applications. Here the authors show the observation, understanding and control of the magnon–phonon interaction by studying the magneto-acoustic resonance modes of a single thin-film Ni nanomagnet.

Nanofocusing in a metal–insulator–metal gap plasmon waveguide with a three-dimensional linear taper

Researchers experimentally demonstrate efficient nanofocusing in gap plasmon waveguides tapered in both transverse dimensions. Two-photon luminescence measurements show an intensity enhancement of 400 within a 14-by-80 nm² area at the tapers narrow end, with a transmittance of 74%.

An experimental design consisting of a photonic-crystal nanoslab covered with upconversion nanoparticles demonstrates the phenomenon of supercritical coupling, resulting in giant enhancement of upconversion by photonic bound states in the continuum.

Investigation of phonon coherence and backscattering using silicon nanomeshes

Low thermal conductivities in nanomeshes have been attributed to both wave-like and particle-like behaviour of phonons. Here, the authors use periodicity-controlled silicon nanomeshes to show that the particle backscattering effect dominates for periodicities above 100 nm and temperatures above 14 K.

Visualizing delocalized correlated electronic states in twisted double bilayer graphene

Twisted double bilayer graphene is a novel van der Waals system that hosts an electric-field-tunable correlated state at half-filling. Here the authors reveal the delocalized nature of this state by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy, suggesting an underlying mechanism of symmetry breaking driven by non-local exchange.
