Observing chaos for quantum-dot microlasers with external feedback

Optoelectronic devices such as conventional semiconductor lasers are used to study the chaotic behaviour of nonlinear systems. Here chaos is observed for quantum-dot microlasers operating close to the quantum limit with potential for new directions in the study of chaos in quantum systems.

Single indistinguishable photon sources with high flux rates and purity are needed in quantum communications. Here, Gschreyet al. use three-dimensional electron-beam lithography to pattern deterministic quantum-dot microlenses and demonstrate enhanced photon-extraction efficiency and photon indistinguishability.

A quantum optical study of thresholdless lasing features in high-β nitride nanobeam cavities

Here the authors present temperature dependent studies of GaN nanobeam lasers grown on a silicon substrate and demonstrate high-βlasing at room temperature. Comprehensive optical and quantum-optical characterization, complemented by microscopic modeling, of the nanolasers allow identification of lasing behavior.

Mutual coupling and synchronization of optically coupled quantum-dot micropillar lasers at ultra-low light levels

The synchronisation of optical cavities in the quantum regime is still relatively unexplored. Here, Kreinberg et al. investigate the coupling behaviour of two quantum dot microlasers and find that spontaneous emission noise from cavity QED effects plays an important role.

An electrically pumped polariton laser

An electrically pumped polariton laser is constructed using a quantum well microcavity, and its polaritonic nature is demonstrated unambiguously by using a magnetic field to probe the part-light, part-matter character of the system.

Annealing-inspired training of an optical neural network with ternary weights

Optical neural networks (ONNs) offer a promising alternative to traditional substrates, with improvements in speed and energy efficiency. This work presents a ternary weight semiconductor laserbased ONN, trained with an in-situ optimization algorithm that enhances convergence and performance, demonstrating long-term inference stability above 99%.
