Credible sustainability certifications require robust evaluation to ensure trustworthiness; however, judgements of sustainable practices may differ between the practitioners and the certifiers. Stakeholder engagement can help bridge this gap to provide robust certification evaluation.

Functional 3D architecture in an intrinsically disordered E3 ligase domain facilitates ubiquitin transfer

RNF4 is a prototypical single-subunit E3 enzyme that can bind both substrate and ubiquitin-loaded E2. Here, the authors show that the RNF4 N-terminal region, although lacking a defined secondary structure, maintains a compact global conformation to facilitate ubiquitin transfer to the substrate.

Structural insight into SUMO chain recognition and manipulation by the ubiquitin ligase RNF4

SUMO forms flexible polymeric chains that can interact with ubiquitin ligases, such as RNF4. Here Xu et al. have used NMR spectroscopy and biochemical experiments to investigate the interaction between SUMO and RNF4, and propose a mechanism for delivery of substrates to the ubiquitination machinery.

The authors measured the variability of neuronal responses across a large number of datasets and cortical areas. They found that variability decreased in response to all stimuli tested, whether the animal was awake, behaving or anesthetized, suggesting that the stabilization of cortex in response to an input is a general cortical property.

In a semi-arid grassland located underneath an agrivoltaic array, grass photosynthesis was reduced by only about 6% and evapotranspiration by about 1%, despite a reduction in light availability by 38%, according to a mechanistic analysis of plant physiological data from a commercial agrivoltaic facility.
