RNA-binding proteins mediate the maturation of chromatin topology during differentiation

Dehingia, Milewska-Puchała and colleagues find a pervasive lncRNA-mediated increase in interactions between CTCF and RNA-binding proteins during embryonic stem cell differentiation. These interactions reinforce chromatin architecture in neural cells.

Structure of the Acid-sensing ion channel 1 in complex with the gating modifier Psalmotoxin 1

The activity of the Acid sensing ion channel 1, ASIC1, can be modulated by the gating modifier Psalmotoxin 1 but the molecular mechanism is unclear. Dawsonet al. report the structure of chicken ASIC1 bound to Psalmotoxin 1 and find that the toxin locks two regulatory regions of the channel into a desensitized conformation.

Binding to SMN2 pre-mRNA-protein complex elicits specificity for small molecule splicing modifiers

Small molecules correcting the splicing deficit of the survival of motor neuron 2 (SMN2) gene have been identified as having therapeutic potential. Here, the authors provide evidence that SMN2 mRNA forms a ribonucleoprotein complex that can be specifically targeted by these small molecules.
