Generation of 10²⁰ W cm⁻² hard X-ray laser pulses with two-stage reflective focusing system

X-ray-free electron lasers produce X-ray pulses for use in applications such as the determination of molecular structures or the study of materials. Here, Mimura and colleagues demonstrate a two-stage focusing scheme to achieve unprecedented laser power densities of over 10²⁰ W cm⁻².

Ferroelectricity in hafnia controlled via surface electrochemical state

Ferroelectricity in hafnia-based systems seems to be correlated with oxygen vacancy dynamics, but the coupling of this and ferroelectric response is rarely studied. Here it is shown that Hf_0.5Zr_0.5O₂ can be antiferroionic, with antiferroelectric behaviour coupled to surface electrochemistry.

The KDM3A–KLF2–IRF4 axis maintains myeloma cell survival

Several histone modifiers have been implicated in the survival of multiple myeloma cells. Here, the authors reveal a role for the histone demethylase KDM3A in the survival of this haematologic cancer, and show that mechanistically KDM3A removes H3K9 methylation from the promoters of KLF2 and IRF4, genes essential for myeloma cell survival.

Land subsidence and uplift influence the rate of sea-level rise. Most coastal populations live in subsiding areas and experience average rates of relative sea-level rise three to four times faster than due to climate change alone, indicating the need for policy to address subsidence.
