Efficient optical extraction of hot-carrier energy

The thermalization of high-energy photons limits the efficient conversion of photon energy in photovoltaic applications. Here, Saeed et al. consider optical extraction of the excess energy of hot carriers by emission of infrared photons, using erbium ions in combination with silicon nanocrystals.

Carrier multiplication in van der Waals layered transition metal dichalcogenides

During carrier multiplication, high-energy free carriers in a given material relax by generation of additional electron-hole pairs. Here, the authors report evidence of carrier multiplication in multilayer MoTe₂ and WSe₂ films with up to 99% conversation efficiency.

Direct generation of multiple excitons in adjacent silicon nanocrystals revealed by induced absorption

Using a photoluminescence-based carrier multiplication mechanism recently proposed for closely spaced silicon nanocrystals in SiO₂, scientists demonstrate that adjacent nanocrystals are excited directly upon absorption of a single high-energy photon. They also demonstrate efficient carrier multiplication with an onset close to the energy conservation threshold of twice the bandgap energy.

Efficient carrier multiplication in CsPbI₃ perovskite nanocrystals

In semiconductor nanocrystals, efficient carrier multiplication counteracts hot carrier thermalization, increasing the overall carrier generation yield. Here, de Weerd et al. observe a quantum yield of up to 98% in CsPbI₃ nanocrystals as a result of efficient carrier multiplication.

Step-like enhancement of luminescence quantum yield of silicon nanocrystals

The photoluminescence quantum yield of photogenerated carriers in silicon nanocrystals increases in a step-like fashion as photon energy is increased, consistent with high-efficiency carrier multiplication.
