Takako Masuda et al. show that individual cells in clonal populations of Crocosphaera watsonii and Cyanothece sp exhibit varied nitrogen fixation rates. This heterogeneity within the population decreases the energetic cost of respiration and expands the viable habitats for these unicellular diazotrophs.
