Photoactive dyes can show promising cytotoxicity via reactive oxygen species generated by photoirradiation, however, the cytotoxicity of small molecule dyes is typically weak. Here, the authors develop 1,3a,6a-triazapentalene derivatives exhibiting selective and efficient photo-induced cytotoxicity.
