  • Using single-molecule transcription imaging upon perturbations to nucleosome remodelers, the transcription factor and the transcriptional machinery, Brouwer et al. reveal how remodeling of promoter nucleosomes regulates the kinetics of transcription.

  • Here the authors show that the regulatory mechanism for transcription of the yeast PHO5 gene operates away from equilibrium, contrary to common assumption about transcriptional regulatory processes. This occurs through the activation domain of the Pho4 activator, which mediates coupling to reservoirs of free energy.
