Predictive equation derived from 6,497 doubly labelled water measurements enables the detection of erroneous self-reported energy intake

This study presents a predictive equation for total energy expenditure derived from doubly labelled water measurements. Applying this equation to two large datasets (the National Diet and Nutrition Survey and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) shows that the misreporting of total energy intake is greater than 50%, with important implications for macronutrient availability.

Single-molecule analysis of processive double-stranded RNA cleavage by Drosophila Dicer-2

Fly Dicer-2 is thought to use two distinct – processive or distributive – modes of cleavage by distinguishing the terminal structures of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) substrates with the help of its cofactor LoquaciousPD (Loqs-PD). Here the authors show by single-molecule imaging that dsRNA terminal structures and Loqs-PD change the probability for Dicer to initiate processive cleavage but not the mode of cleavage action per se.

Identification of heart rate–associated loci and their effects on cardiac conduction and rhythm disorders

Ruth Loos and colleagues report a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies in 181,171 individuals identifying 14 new loci associated with heart rate and test these for association with cardiac conduction, rhythm disorders and cardiovascular disease. Their experimental studies in Drosophila melanogaster and zebrafish models provide support for a role for 20 candidate genes at 11 of these loci in regulation of heart rate.

Pupylation is a bacterial post-translational protein modification, where the small ubiquitin-like protein Pup is covalently attached to lysine side chains of target proteins, which is a reversible process and depupylation is catalysed by the depupylase enzyme, Dop.
