Dynamic constriction and fission of endoplasmic reticulum membranes by reticulon

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an intracellular network characterized by highly dynamic behavior whose control mechanisms are unclear. Here, the authors show that the ER-membrane protein Reticulon (Rtnl1) can constrict ER bilayers and lead to ER fission.

A hemi-fission intermediate links two mechanistically distinct stages of membrane fission

The GTPase dynamin provides the driving force for fission of membrane-bound vesicular structures; here, it is shown that dynamin-driven membrane fission proceeds in two mechanistically distinct stages that are separated by a metastable hemi-fission intermediate that requires GTP hydrolysis for progression to full fission.

Synaptotagmin: fusogenic role for calcium sensor?

Two recent studies focusing on synaptotagmin-1's role in synaptic vesicle fusion suggest that it may be key in bringing vesicle and target membranes together and in promoting SNARE assembly. The highly positive electrostatic potential of the synaptotagmin surface could catalyze fusion.
