  • The surface of hot neutron stars is known to be covered by a thin atmosphere but observations have been unable to confirm the atmospheric composition of isolated neutron stars. An analysis of archival observations of the compact X-ray source in the centre of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant now reveals that an extremely young carbon-atmosphere neutron star (with low magnetic field) produces a good fit to the spectrum.

  • X-ray observations of two large glitches bracketing a fast radio burst in the active Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 reveal a connection between rapid spin change and radiative behaviours of the magnetar.

  • The current paradigm of material transport across the ocean-floor by gravity currents, is of turbulent flows with mixing processes analogous to rivers. However, uniquely high-resolution field data demonstrate that this paradigm is flawed and that gravity currents are analogous to self-organised atmospheric jets.

  • The so-called braking index calculated for the spin-down of rotating neutron stars, or pulsars, doesn’t tally well with observations. But a model accounting for a changing moment of inertia, as an increasing fraction of the stellar core becomes superfluid, can explain the rotational evolution of young pulsars.
