Effect of hydrogen on the integrity of aluminium–oxide interface at elevated temperatures

Hydrogen gas can drive detachment of protective surface oxides from metal substrates and this process is accelerated at moderately elevated temperatures relevant to applications. Here the authors use environmental transmission electron microscopy to monitor associated void coalescence processes and clarify roles that diffusion and hydrogen-vacancy complexes play.

Excellent hardening effect in lead-free piezoceramics by embedding local Cu-doped defect dipoles in phase boundary engineering

There is a long-standing trade-off between piezoelectric coefficient and mechanical quality factor for piezoceramics. Here, authors embed local defect dipoles into phase boundary engineering to relieve this relationship in (K, Na) NbO3 piezoceramics.

Fast water transport and molecular sieving through ultrathin ordered conjugated-polymer-framework membranes

Carbon nanomaterials such as graphene show intriguing molecular transport properties, but to achieve regular channels over a large area requires perfect sheet alignment. Here, a large-area two-dimensional conjugated-polymer-framework is grown with regular pore distribution, enabling 99.5% salt rejection by forward osmosis.

Spin-momentum locking and spin-orbit torques in magnetic nano-heterojunctions composed of Weyl semimetal WTe₂

The Fermi arcs, topological surface states of Weyl semimetals can enable the intriguing spin control and facilitate topological spintronics. Here the authors report the spin-orbit torque at the interface of WTe₂/Py and attribute it to the enhanced spin accumulation by the spin-momentum locking effect of the Fermi arcs of WTe₂.

Electric-field-driven non-volatile multi-state switching of individual skyrmions in a multiferroic heterostructure

Nonreciprocal charge transport up to room temperature in bulk Rashba semiconductor α-GeTe

Evidence for topological type-II Weyl semimetal WTe₂

Exotic transport properties of type-II Weyl semimetals have been predicted but are yet to be experimentally evidenced. Here, Li et al. report evidences of an anisotropy of negative magnetoresistance and a quantum oscillation arising from the predicted Weyl orbit in the type-II Weyl semimetal WTe₂.
