Ultra-weak infrared light detection based on steep-slope phototransistors

The lowest detectable light intensity is normally described by the specific detectivity of photodetectors. Here, the authors demonstrate that the photo-carrier injection, rather than the detectivity, determines the turn-on threshold power in steep-slope black phosphorus photo-tunneling-transistors, showing a minimum detectable infrared light power down to ~35 pW at 80 K.

Analysis of the matrix metalloproteinase family reveals that MMP8 is often mutated in melanoma

Yardena Samuels and colleagues report a mutational analysis of the matrix metalloproteinase gene family in cutaneous metastatic melanoma. They find frequent somatic mutations in MMP8 and present functional evidence that wild-type MMP-8 inhibits melanoma progression.

Extensive disruption of protein interactions by genetic variants across the allele frequency spectrum in human populations

Low frequency coding single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) are predicted to disproportionately affect protein function. Here, the authors evaluate 2,009 missense SNVs across 2,185 protein-protein interactions using yeast two-hybrid and protein complementation assays and find that disruptive SNVs often occur in disease-associated genes.

Exon capture analysis of G protein-coupled receptors identifies activating mutations in GRM3 in melanoma

Yardena Samuels and colleagues sequenced G protein-coupled receptors in 11 melanoma samples and report a comprehensive map of somatic variants in the GPCR gene family. They find frequent mutations in GRM3, which promote proliferation and migration of melanoma cells.

Analysis of the tyrosine kinome in melanoma reveals recurrent mutations in ERBB4

Yardena Samuels and colleagues report a mutational analysis of the protein tyrosine kinase family in cutaneous metastatic melanoma. They find ERBB4 mutations in 19% of tumors and show that these mutations enhance ERBB4 kinase activity and transformation ability, identifying ERBB4 as a potential drug target in melanomas carrying these mutations.

Exome sequencing identifies GRIN2A as frequently mutated in melanoma

Single-cell analysis supports a luminal-neuroendocrine transdifferentiation in human prostate cancer

Using single-cell RNA sequencing, Dong, Miao, Wang et al. profile the transcriptomes of 21,292 cells from biopsies of 6 castration-resistant prostate cancers. They find that all neuroendocrine tumor cells display a luminal-like epithelial phenotype, providing insights into the cellular states underlying neuroendocrine transdifferentiation in human prostate cancer.
