Understanding the ubiquitous cation specificity in electrocatalysis is of great fundamental and technical significance. Here, the authors report atomic-scale evidence showing that the kinetic cation effect in alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis is related to proton transfer in the electric double-layer.
