  • Metasurfaces promise the possibility of thin optical elements, like lenses, but these mostly suffer from chromatic aberrations. Here, the authors demonstrate a multilayer fabrication approach with multiple materials to realise achromatic lenses and multispectral functional optical elements.

  • Phased metasurfaces have been extended to the nonlinear regime, enabling coherent generation, beam steering and lensing of light beams in one thin element. Here, Almeida et al. demonstrate a nonlinear multilayer metamaterial hologram generating images at the third harmonic frequency of the illuminating beam.

  • The fundamental issue of phase-matching across metasurfaces has not been thoroughly addressed. Here, Almeida et al. show full phase control by introducing a spatially varying phase response of a metallic metasurface consisting of subwavelength nanoantennas and demonstrate metasurface-phase-matching.

  • The rotational Doppler frequency shift is observed for a circularly polarized lightwave propagating through a gas of synchronously spinning molecules by using a linearly polarized pulsed laser beam to align diatomic molecules and a linearly polarized pulse to induce concerted unidirectional rotation.

  • Alignment and orientation of the molecules allows studying the photon-molecule interactions in greater detail. Here the authors demonstrate the three-dimensional orientation of SO2 molecules in using COLTRIMS and orthogonally polarized laser pulses but in the absence of DC field.

  • Following an impulsive laser excitation of a single molecule, a dispersed vibrational wave-packet is partially rephased by a second pulse, and a wave-packet echo is observed. This wave-packet echo probes ultrafast intramolecular processes in the isolated molecule.
