Complex chemical reaction networks (CRNs) in metabolism inspire the artificial control of multi-step reactions to synthesize structurally complex compounds. Here, the authors explore the formose reaction as a non-enzymatic CRN, revealing that complementary activation of substructures by multiple catalysts of γ-Al2O3 and phosphates can induce novel functions, highlighting the potential for designing advanced CRNs.
