Neuronal and non-neuronal functions of the synaptic cell adhesion molecule neurexin in Nematostella vectensis

The evolutionary origin of neural synapses is unclear. Analysis of cnidarian neurexins provides clues as to when this synaptic hub molecule, which had an ancestral role in adhesion between heterotypic epithelial cells, acquired a neuronal function.

Mouse enteric neurons control intestinal plasmacytoid dendritic cell function via serotonin-HTR7 signaling

Roles of serotonergic neurons in immune homeostasis and host defense are largely unexplored. Here the authors show that in mice enteric serotonergic neurons regulate immune homeostasis and host defense against Salmonella infection by orchestrating gut homing and activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cell, ultimately promoting the differentiation of protective IgA⁺ B cells.

Behavioural individuality determines infection risk in clonal ant colonies

Behaviour drives infection risk in social groups. Here, Li et al. show that depending on the behavioural role of clonal ants in a colony, genetically identical individuals face vastly different risks of becoming infected with parasitic nematodes.

Fitness benefits and emergent division of labour at the onset of group living

Experimental data from, and mathematical modelling of, colonies of the clonal raider ant Ooceraea biroi demonstrate that increases in group size generate division of labour among similar individuals, increased homeostasis and higher colony fitness.
