In the originally published version of this article, Extended Data Fig. 6c was inadvertently labelled as Col-0, although it shows the phosphate starvation reporter line IPS1–GUS in Col-0 background from the same experiment as Extended Data Fig. 5c. This error occurred during figure preparation. Due to the age of the article, the image cannot be updated directly; the corrected Extended Data Fig. 6c is now provided below (Fig. 1). This correction does not affect the results or conclusions of the study.
