Slight, but non-statistically significant differences in food intake and energy expenditure leading to a net difference in energy balance likely explain the reduced body weight exhibited by male APN KO mice. Male APN−/− and WT littermate controls (n = 7–8) were fed a HFD for 6 weeks and were placed into a 16-cage Promethion multichannel continuous measurement indirect calorimetry system (Sable System International, Las Vegas, NV, USA) on a 12-h light and 12-h dark cycle for a 11-day period. The data presented is (A) cumulative food intake, (B) cumulative energy expenditure, (C) net energy balance, (D) total energy balance over the course of the 10-day experiment assessed via CalR, (E) the RER calculated during the lowest 30-min period of energy expenditure during the light cycle, and (F) the RER over the course of the experimental run utilizing CalR. Data is presented as mean ± SE. *Signifies statistically significant differences (P < 0.05).
