Increased levels of aldosterone seem to have a role in treatment-resistant arterial hypertension, hypertension associated with primary aldosteronism and heart failure. This Review examines the evidence regarding this connection and discusses the efficacy and safety of treatment with mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists and with aldosterone synthase inhibitors.
