Contrasting features of fibrosing NSIP (a, b) and SRIF (c, d). At low magnification (a) NSIP is characterized by uniform, mild thickening of alveolar septa without background emphysema. At high magnification (b) the fibrosis is composed of lightly staining, delicate collagen deposition along with mild chronic inflammation. The appearance contrasts strikingly with the more advanced and severe fibrosis of SRIF (c), which is composed mainly of dense, hyalinized collagen deposition with minimal inflammation (d). Emphysema and RB are additionally present in SRIF.
