Colloidal nanocrystals represent a broad class of solution-processable materials with properties that can be tuned to match the requirements of each component of an electronic device. However, as Kagan explains, “in previous work by us and others in the community, only one component has been realized from nanocrystals and the other components have typically been deposited using conventional vacuum-based deposition”. For example, in separate studies, the authors previously demonstrated high-conductivity electrodes and high-mobility semiconductor channels using metallic and semiconductor nanocrystals, respectively. In their latest work, they took up the challenge of combining conducting, semiconducting and insulating nanocrystals in a single device: “We wanted to understand if we could design the materials, interfaces and processes to ‘put the pieces together’ and demonstrate that colloidal nanocrystals could be integrated to realize the same high performance as we had previously attained in devices fabricated using conventional vacuum techniques.”
