The coincidence of the Silverpit crater and a Tertiary fold axis is curious. There can be no doubt that the regional folds are detachment structures accommodated by flow of Permian evaporites. It is quite straightforward, however, to demonstrate that the Silverpit crater itself is unrelated to salt withdrawal, as Underhill¹ proposes.
