E&Y report backs Asia-Pacific biotech

“The Asian biotech industry is ready to take off,” says Charlie Craig, Atlanta-based editor of the Ernst & Young Asia-Pacific report 'On the threshold,' published in June 2004. The report reveals that the biotech sector in the Asia-Pacific region grew significantly in 2003 (see Table 1). Europe, by contrast, has experienced negative growth during the same period. The report also shows that the biotech sector is not homogenous across the region; for example, Australia is among the most developed in the region and India and China are emerging as the powerhouses of the Asia-Pacific region.

One of the strengths of countries such as China, India, Japan and Korea is that they have expatriates with experience in the Western biopharmaceutical industry and they bring knowledge of its standards when they return to their respective homelands. “The advantage of Asia over Europe is that expatriates bring back their ideas and money,” explains David Kryl, scientific director of technology transfer company SciTrax, in London, and a former member of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The business culture that pervades the Asia-Pacific region, which sharply contrasts with the academic culture of European biotech, has prompted many Asian entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunity offered by low wages and low clinical trials and production costs.
