Although sextant biopsies of the prostate have become the standard technique for the investigation of raised PSA levels, cancer in the lateral and peripheral zones of the prostate might not be detected. Extended, multicore protocols that include peripheral biopsies have reduced the false-negative rate, but there is still a possibility that some cancers could be missed.
