Abstract

The purpose of this research experiment was to perform and improve the synthesis of resveratrol (CAS: 501-36-0). Resveratrol (trans-3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene), a natural polyphenolic, non-flavonoid antioxidant, is a phytoalexin found naturally in many plants. The compound was synthesized using the decarbonylative Heck reaction. The modified four-step reaction generated poor yields but the spectra indicate that the overall resveratrol compound was obtained. Several improvements were made to help increase yield.
