Hengartner and colleagues were interested in the link between HIF1 and apoptosis and so analysed DNA damage-induced cell death in the germ line, which is dependent on CEP1, in mutant worms that had a disrupted von Hippel-Lindau gene ( vhl1 ) — VHL is required for the degradation of HIF1. HIF1 levels were increased and the germline cells were resistant to apoptosis induced by ionizing or ultraviolet radiation, indicating that HIF1 expression can antagonize DNA damage-induced cell death. The stabilization of HIF1 did not affect physiological cell death in the germ line, which is CEP1 independent.
