Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) loss is a common early event in colorectal cancer development, and understanding the requirements of APC-deficient cells might lead to better therapies and preventive agents. Faller et al. have shown that intestinal cells lacking APC depend on mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) signalling for tumour formation, but that it is translation elongation controlled by mTORC1 (and not translation initiation) that is important in these cells.
