Profiles of lung cancer

The authors correlated gene-expression profiles with clinical outcome in patients with lung adenocarcinoma and identified specific gene patterns that predict survival in patients with stage I disease.

Gene-expression profiles were obtained for 86 primary lung adenocarcinomas and 10 non-tumour lung samples, and 4966 genes were identified. Use of hierarchical clustering yielded three clusters of tumours, and these groups showed significant differences with respect to tumour stage and tumour classification. This indicates that, as expected, tumours with similar differentiation characteristics show similar gene expression, and that many higher-stage tumours are often poorly differentiated and are associated with poor survival — most of these tumours were located in cluster three. Interestingly, eleven stage I tumours were also located in cluster three.
