Complement system inhibitors

The pathogenesis of dry AMD is linked to abnormal activation of the complement system. Therapeutic agents targeting the complement cascade include POT-4 (Potentia Pharmaceuticals, Alcon), an intravitreally injected synthetic peptide that reversibly binds complement factor C3 and is in Phase III trials. AL-78898A (Alcon), an intravitreally injected drug that also inhibits complement factor C3, is in Phase II trials.
