PPAR agonists in pre-eclampsia and hypertension?

Women with pre-eclampsia or gestational hypertension are highly sensitive to the effects of angiotensin II, but the mechanism by which this occurs is unknown. Building on previous research, in which regulator of G protein signaling 5 (RGS5) was found to regulate blood pressure in response to angiotensin II, investigators from the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research at The University of Western Australia now show that this protein can regulate angiotensin II sensitivity during pregnancy. The findings highlight a new approach to treat gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia.

“During normal pregnancy, angiotensin II sensitivity decreases, whereas women with pre-eclampsia exhibit increased sensitivity,” explains study author Ruth Ganss. “This intriguing phenomenon is still largely unexplained and motivated us to study the role of RGS5 during pregnancy.”
