Helicobacter pylori infection may be protective against IBD

Helicobacter pylori infection may have a protective effect against the development of IBD, according to the results of a new study.

A meta-analysis has also found a negative association between H. pylori infection and IBD. “Since most experts in the IBD field argue that this is probably related to the 'hygiene hypothesis'—meaning that H. pylori status is a marker of where you grow up—we wanted to demonstrate in the laboratory that H. pylori infection can protect against experimental colitis,” explains John Kao, one of the authors of the current study.
