John Rioux and colleagues have demonstrated that a set of genes modulated by MAST3 has a role in the immune response in IBD.

Previous genetic association studies have identified MAST3 as a susceptibility gene for IBD. “Genetic studies push medical sciences forward by identifying genes and unravelling new pathways associated to diseases,” says Rioux. “However, functional studies are needed to make the ultimate causative link between molecular mechanisms and phenotype.”
