A signature to predict disease progression in patients with hepatitis C and early-stage cirrhosis

In a new study published in Gut, a 186-gene signature with high prognostic value for HCV-related complications has been validated using a microarray platform that was cleared by the FDA in 2013 for use in predicting breast cancer recurrence. The authors combined this 186-gene signature with patients' serum bilirubin and platelet measurements into a prognostic index that stratifies patients by risk of developing liver-related complications.

In a previous study, the authors had validated the prognostic index using a different microarray platform. To compare this new assay, the authors reanalysed RNA from 90 samples of an Italian cohort of patients (n = 216) and found only three samples had inconsistent risk prediction between tests.
