A variant resulting in hypofunctional IRAK2 hampers spontaneous clearance of HCV

In a new study published in Hepatology, the Leu392Val substitution (rs3844283) in IL-1R-associated kinase (IRAK)2, with a homozygous prevalence of ∼15% in white people, results in a reduced ability to spontaneously clear HCV infection.

“As IRAK are critical mediators in TLR [Toll-like receptor] pathways ... we investigated this group of kinases and focused on IRAK2 as not much is known about this kinase in humans,” explains corresponding author Alexander Weber. The authors focused on rs3844283 as this germline mutation is relatively frequent in white people and other ethnic groups.
