The production of ROS by the NOX2 NADPH oxidase within the phagosome is a common protective mechanism used by host cells, and many intracellular pathogens have evolved ways to overcome this. As L. monocytogenes infection has been shown to trigger the production of ROS, it had been postulated that the bacterium also blocks the activity of NADPH oxidase to ensure its survival until it escapes from the phagosome; however, this had not been tested.
