Urinary fingerprints unique to patients with ADPKD

The detection and diagnosis of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) usually relies on renal ultrasound and a positive family history. However, biomarkers could be used to support early detection, monitor disease progression, identify factors involved in the disease pathogenesis, and inform on the success of therapeutic interventions. A study utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was carried out by researchers from the universities of Erlangen and Regensburg, Germany, to determine whether levels of metabolites in the urine of patients with ADPKD and other renal diseases are different to levels in urine from healthy volunteers. “The use of urinary NMR-based metabolomics offers for the patient and the clinic the advantage of easy and routine sample collection, with minimal sample pretreatment and easy sample handling,” comments investigator Wolfram Gronwald.
