KIR4.1 as an autoantigen in MS—new questions raised

Humoral autoimmune responses are implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), and a study from 2012 suggested that the glial inwardly rectifying potassium channel KIR4.1 might be a target of autoantibodies in up to 50% of patients with this disease. However, in a new study by Brickshawana et al. in The Lancet Neurology, no evidence of anti-KIR4.1 autoantibodies was found in patients with MS, calling this association into question.
