Quality of life during ADT—time to consider the options

“There is a lot of literature concerning the adverse effects of ADT, but very little has come from randomized controlled trials,” explains lead investigator Jim Denham. To address these deficits, and to explore survival benefits, the RADAR trial was initiated with four arms: 6 months of neoadjuvant ADT or 18 months ADT with or without zoledronic acid (for bone-related events). The PROs, a secondary end point, encompass hormone-treatment-related symptoms, sexual activity, social function, fatigue and financial problems.

Although global health status was statistically equivalent between patients in all groups throughout the trial and follow-up period, most PROs were negatively affected at the end of radiotherapy. At 18 months, men in the 18-month treatment groups were significantly worse off in many PROs than those in the 6-month groups. However, for the most part, these differences between the groups resolved within 36 months.
